The other day, I was listening to my own collection of music when I turned on the radio. The first two songs I heard were "3" by Britney Spears (O_O) and "Fireflies" by Owl City. The first song was blatantly about threesomes and the next one was catchy, yet nonsense. I feel songs nowadays are more computerized then based on, yaknow, talent.
Also, the meanings of songs have been based on sex, love, and drugs since forever, but it seems like artists have gotten much less conservative. So if music is going to be computerized and sex based, isn't that like broadcasting porn all over America, open to all audiences?

Dear favorite person-
ReplyDeleteim glad youre blogging! I think you've touched on a very important point, which is that popular music nowadays is pretty useless from a musical standpoint. Is it porn? nahh. it's bordering on it though. I think it's just excessive obscenity that our society has chosen not only to accept, but to celebrate(unfortunately). I'm not even sure how you write a song about sex, nor do I really want to.
while we have all this nonsense music, there's also amazing, beautiful music from people who have passion and talent. I think there's hope for music. We, society as a whole, should just do a better job of recognizing these people and holding their work in high regard. Good thoughts, keep writing. You're good at it

ReplyDeleteYESTHANKYOU!
ReplyDeleteI'm actually on the iTunes top songs list now. There's a song called "You're a Jerk", and there's that "3" song. I really am disappointed with the music industry nowadays, it's all artificial rap and singing about either strippers, sex, drugs, alcohol, and the like. But instead of it being PG-ish, like in the '80s, it's basically out there in the open now and it's mainly a younger audience listening. I don't know if that was intended (hope not) but it still isn't a very good example to set.
Sure, it's catchy, but my little brother runs around the house singing "If U Seek Amy." And there are some who write songs for comedy (The Lonely Island on SNL) but so many rap artists have made me lose a lot of faith in music.
I don't think I've been on an iTunes shopping spree since before summer.
But I'm glad you made this point. I think a lot of real music lovers would agree with you on this.
